Walker BTM

My first modification to the Excursion was some exhaust. There are lots of turbo back setups on the market ranging in price from $300 all the way up to over $700 for a stainless setup. After doing some investigating at the forums on the web I found that replacing the factory muffler would give about 80% of what a full 4 inch exhaust system would give. The one most everyone was using was the Walker BTM (Big Truck Muffler). I got the part number 21470 and called up NAPA. They showed the part and ordered it for me, I had it the next day. Best of all it was $70 with tax, compared to over $400 for a 4 inch setup I was willing to try it out. Besides the stock exhaust was way to... well... STOCK sounding for me.

The first attempt to install made it more difficult to drive, I knocked down lots of people and parking was a PITA. I did get lots of compliments from the local ricers though.

This way ended up being the best way to install it. The factory muffler is an offset in/out setup. The output is at the lower end of the muffler.

The Walker is also longer than the stock muffler. We had to cut part of the off just before the curve up over the rearend. Just enough was left to slide the BTM over and weld it up. The stock hanger was torched off the muffler and welded on to the pipe and hung back up.

I did not have a catalytic converter so that was one less thing to cut off. The stock hanger did not have to be changed on the front pipe that runs from the downpipe to the muffler.

Finished product. Notice the nice welds done by the self proclaimed Master welder Jeff. He does nice work.

I do not have a set of gauges installed yet so I can not say how much this lowered the EGT’s. Others who have installed it said that does lower them some. The sound is really great. It has a the flutter of a diesel and the turbo really whistles especially when its wound up. It has more of a rumble also. Over all I am really happy with it. It does not have the big 4 or 5 inch chrome tip but it sure sounds good and the price is well worth it.
